i took this photo of gordon several years ago. it was at a church without walls saturday morning outreach in balboa park. my friend was leading the ministry at the time and asked if some of the photographers could come and take some photos. pete and i came down that morning, along with alex who was helping russell lead worship.
this photo makes me think of the Grace of God.
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
(Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV)
if we call out to Jesus and ask for forgiveness, He will forgive us and purify us from our sins ( 1 John 1:9). no matter how bad weve been, how many brides weve made cry because our film got exposed by accident (thats never happened to me thankfully. although ive made a bride mad once!). no matter how good or bad weve been…we cant reach God on our own!
like the photo of gordon…he was there to help with worship and ended up ministering to this homeless guy who just wanted someone to listen to him and tell him that its not too late for him to know God. it wasnt! and it isnt!!i love this photo! it was taken this summer at a rock jrhigh camp. it was outside in the amphitheater under the stars. they had some stage lighting on but she was in the seating area so whatever light there was fell on her shoulders.
i remember looking up and seeing her, the kids were rocking out to the worship team but she was still. she was one of the leaders that week, but at that moment, it was just her and God as He was ministering to her. as best as i could, i tried to get a good position to maximize what little light there was…and more importantly i didnt want to get in the way of what God was doing!
as i recall, i was only able to take 2 or 3 photos before she moved and my light changed. i did tweak the photo in lightroom a bit and i actually ended up darkening the image to expose the highlights more.
the good news is that God allows u-turns, mulligans, do-overs, re-shoots and re-takes…whatever term you wanna use, no matter what youve done God offers grace and forgiveness. a free gift!
part of what i want to show through the images God gives me is that there is hope. i want to show the world that as bad as things look, good (read God) always triumphs over evil in the end!
this photo is a reminder to me that no matter what im doing or photographing….all that really matters is Jesus!
